BANYAN BOOSTS WIDE AREA CONNECTIVITY SPEED AND FLEXIBILITY
WITH X.29, ICAplus OPTIONS TO VINES 4.11
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23, 1991 -- Banyan Systems today added powerful
new wide area connectivity options to Banyan VINES~, to enable
remote network users to dial into VINES at faster transmission
speeds, and give network administrators increased flexibility for
connecting remote sites, linking dispersed servers and configuring
enterprise-wide networks. The X.29 Dial-in software and ICAplus
Intelligent Communications Adapter are options supported by VINES
Version 4.11, also introduced today at the Association of Banyan
Users International (ABUI) conference being held here.
"These connectivity products are important new tools for companies
building enterprise-wide networks," said Bill Johnson, Vice
President, Product Marketing. "Banyan has a reputation for
providing the best products for high-end, geographically
dispersed networks. Today's introduction of VINES 4.11, X.29
Dial-in and the ICAplus underscore this continued commitment."
X.29 Dial-in
CCITT-compliant, X.29 Dial-in is incorporated into Banyan's
existing X.29 option which offers outbound functionality. X.29
Dial-in allows multiple PCs to dial into a VINES 4.11
server over a single X.29 connection through an X.25 public data
network or through an AT&T 5ESS ISDN switch. This provides network
administrators with greater flexibility in configuring remote
access, faster transmission speeds and cost-effective
connections.
The X.29 software resides on the Banyan VINES server, along with
the physical connection to the X.25 network, creating an X.29
Packet Assembler/Disassembler (PAD). Multiple hosts can be
simultaneously accessed on a single ICA line through
VINES support for both virtual and permanent circuits. A wide
variety of terminal emulation packages can operate over VINES X.29
Outbound, giving users versatile interfaces to host-based data and
applications.
The X.29 option allows remote VINES clients to access VINES servers
across ISDN and X.25 public/private data networks. Users on an
AT&T 5ESS ISDN switch can utilize the D-channel for packet switched
data up to 19.2 Kbps. High-speed 19.2 Kbps connections through
X.25 public networks are also supported. In either case, the link
is completely transparent to users who view the network as a single
system in which global resources are easily available.
ICAplus Intelligent Communications Adapter
Compatible with Banyan's existing ICA communications adapter, the
new ICAplus Intelligent Communications Adapter offers increased
performance up to 384Kbps, and provides fractional T1 connectivity
to significantly cut communications costs. With ICAplus, users can
take advantage of higher speed connections for wide-area, server-
to-server High-level Data Link Control (HDLC) communications.
Using one or more ICAplus or ICA cards in a VINES server eliminates
the need for multiple types of communications boards because a
single card can support multiple protocols simultaneously,
including asynchronous, HDLC, Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC),
bisynchronous, X.25 and X.29. For example, a single ICA or ICAplus
card can support an IBM SNA mainframe connection, an X.25 network
connection, two DEC VAX computer connections, and PC Dial-in
connections. This can be reconfigured at any time simply by
redefining one of the ports. ICAplus also offers an
optional V.35 adapter for the conversion of RS-232C signals to V.35
signals, the standard hardware interface for high speed data
communications.
ICAplus includes a full 16-bit data path and an on-board Intel
80286 microprocessor that operate communications functions and keep
the server CPU free to run applications. Both ICAplus and ICA
support 80386 or i486-based IBM PC AT or
compatible computers and EISA bus computers. The ICA also supports
IBM PS/2 or compatible computers.
Pricing and Availability
The X.29 option with inbound and outbound functions is priced at
$995, with first shipments scheduled for November 1. It requires
a VINES 4.11 server or greater, and optional WAN connectivity
components.
The ICAplus card is priced at $2,495 and is available immediately.
An upgrade option is available for current ICA users.
